Accelerator mass spectrometry: ultra-sensitive analysis for global science

چکیده

Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is the analytical technique of choice for the detection of long-lived radionuclides that cannot be practically analysed with decay counting or conventional mass spectrometry. AMS has been used for the analysis of C, Be, Cl and other cosmogenic radionuclides in archaeology, geology and environmental science. In addition, the ultrasensitivity of AMS is being applied in biomedicine to study the exposure of human tissues to chemicals and biomolecules at attomole levels. AMS is also being considered for the detection of anthropogenic radionuclides, such as I and U, in environmental samples for the verification of the nuclear nonproliferation agreements. The state of the art of AMS is reviewed with examples from some recent applications. r 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A highly sensitive method for the reassessment and quantification of Pu in urine samples based on a 1 MV accelerator mass spectrometry system

A new and highly sensitive method for the determination of Pu in human urine has been developed permitting the reassessment of planchets initially prepared for alpha spectrometry (AS) analysis in the context of internal dosimetry. A set of urine samples (volume: 500 mL) was spiked with known quantities of Pu, ranging from 2 to 120 fg (4.6 mBq–0.3 mBq), employing 14 pg (2.05 mBq) of Pu as intern...

Accelerator mass spectrometry analysis of ultra-low-level (129)I in carrier-free AgI-AgCl sputter targets.

Separation of carrier-free iodine from low-level iodine samples and accurate measurement of ultra-low-level (129)I in microgram iodine target are essential but a bottleneck in geology and environment research using naturally produced (129)I. This article presents a detection technique of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) for accurate determination of ultra-low-level (129)I in carrier-free AgI...

Protein profiling and analysis of drug sensitive and multidrug resistant isolates of Mycobacterium tuberculosis by native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry

Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a deadly infectious disease despite all the efforts to reduce its incidence. Spread of multidrug resistant TB has seriously undermined the efforts to control the disease globally. In this study protein expression profile of MDR and sensitive isolates of MTB were analyzed and compared in order to identify proteins, which could be used in prevention, diagno...

Trends in ultrasensitive proteomics.

Here we review recent developments and trends in sample preparation, pre-fractionation, chromatography and mass spectrometry contributing towards the ultra-sensitive global analysis of proteins. Highly sensitive MS-based proteomics is not only beneficiary for the proteome analysis of single cells, an aim which is getting into reach, but also clearly relevant for the analysis of (a) subcellular ...
